What this house is after

An evening at a table and then bed is a better night for this villa than somebody who was there when the door shut. That is not a slogan, it is the brief the lamp room was fitted out to in 2023. Three tables, not seven. Midnight, not three. No credit. No cash machine anywhere on this property. The counter in the hall stops at ten, an hour and a half before the tables, and guests notice that by the second evening.

Age, every visit

Eighteen in Finland, photographic proof every time, including for the guest who ate in the dining room an hour before. A picture of an identity card on a phone is not an identity card.

What the staff do, standing there

• Hold a limit you have set. Say the figure before you sit and it goes on the sheet.
• Read the clock out loud the first time somebody asks. It has a pendulum and it is accurate.
• Leave your place for twenty minutes while you go out to the hall, eat something, or stand on the veranda in the cold.
• Keep you out for a run of days if you want that, noted for whoever is next on the door.
• Take a self-exclusion at the desk in the hall, in person, in force the same evening.

None of that is on this website, deliberately. Each one is spoken to a person standing a metre away, twenty paces along the hall. A form on a screen is easier to administer and harder to be honest in front of.

Five things to catch in yourself

• You are thinking about the lamp room while standing on the jetty at eleven at night in June, when the sky has not gone dark, which is what people come to this shore for.
• You went back down the hall after saying out loud that you had finished for the night.
• You have checked the bus times into the city and back, and you checked them this week.
• The figure in front of you is one you would rather nobody upstairs knew.
• You would rather the staff did not use your name. They do, because eight rooms and eight people is nobody at all.

Training

Whoever works that door is taken through it before a first shift and yearly from then: the law, how to read proof of age, how to refuse somebody without making a scene of it, and the guest whose drinking has outstripped the play. The duty manager looks in twice an evening. Both of ours have closed a table early and neither was afterwards asked to explain it.

How to ask

Mention it to whoever is at the door, or to the desk in the hall. The words you use are beside the point. Nobody will be strange with you about it and nobody will tell anyone who has no reason to know.
